The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates is a small ancient Greek memorial in central Athens, erected in 334 BC to celebrate a chorus victory. It is notable as an early and well-preserved example of the use of Corinthian-style ornament on a freestanding monument.
The structure is a circular, finely carved marble monument set on a plinth and surrounded by a short urban setting; it is a frequent stop on walking tours of the Acropolis and Plaka neighborhoods. Because of its scale it is examined at close range and photographed from the adjacent pedestrian streets.
Commissioned by the wealthy patron Lysicrates, the monument marked the victory of a chorus at the City Dionysia and originally displayed a metal tripod as the prize. Over the centuries it survived as a visible reminder of classical choregic culture and later influenced neoclassical architecture.
It stands in the Plaka quarter of Athens on Tripodon/Lysikratous streets, within easy walking distance of the Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysus and other central ancient sites.
