Chlemoutsi

Chlemoutsi is a medieval hilltop castle in the Elis area of western Peloponnese, Greece, noted for its well-preserved fortress architecture. It occupies a dominant position on a coastal hill and was one of the principal Latin strongholds in the region.

The core features are a robust keep, thick curtain walls and circular towers that form a concentric layout; the defensive plan reflects Crusader-era military architecture. Visitors explore ramparts, internal courtyards and viewpoints over the surrounding plain and sea.

Construction dates to the early 13th century when the Frankish Principality of Achaea consolidated control over parts of the Peloponnese; the castle later passed through various hands and saw modifications but retains much of its medieval fabric. It served as a military stronghold and regional administrative centre during the Latin occupation.

The castle stands on a hill near the Kyllini peninsula on Greece’s western coast, providing views across farmland to the Ionian Sea and lying within reach of local coastal towns.
