Chinyero Volcano

Chinyero is a volcanic cinder cone on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and is the site of the island’s most recent eruption in 1909. It forms part of Tenerife’s volcanic terrain on the island’s western slopes.

Hikers follow mountain trails that pass volcanic cones, lava flows and basaltic terrain around Chinyero, observing recent volcanic landforms and panoramic views of the island. The cone and its lava field are a clear example of Tenerife’s ongoing volcanic geology.

The cone produced a basaltic eruption in 1909, which is recorded as Tenerife’s last historical eruptive event. The eruption produced lava flows and tephra that are still evident in the landscape.

Chinyero sits on the western side of Tenerife within the Canary Islands archipelago, in a mountainous zone that is commonly visited from the island’s road network and hiking routes.
