Chimborazo
Volcano Inactive stratovolcano and Ecuador's highest point
Chimborazo dominates central Ecuador as the country’s highest mountain; climbers tackle glaciated slopes, acclimatise in nearby towns and aim for high‑altitude refuges.
Chimborazo is an inactive stratovolcano in central Ecuador and the province’s namesake peak, standing among the country’s highest mountains. Its summit is famous in geodesy for being the point on Earth farthest from the planet’s center because of the equatorial bulge.
Mountaineers visit for high-altitude climbs that involve glacier travel and crevasse navigation; routes are glaciated and require technical equipment and acclimatisation. The mountain is a landmark in Ecuadorian mountaineering and draws both technical climbers and visitors who view the peak from nearby towns and vantage points.
Chimborazo formed through volcanic activity during the region’s Andean orogeny and has been shaped by glaciation; it has not been historically active in recent centuries. Human use ranges from indigenous highland grazing historically to modern climbing and scientific interest.
The volcano rises in Chimborazo Province in the central highlands of Ecuador, dominating the surrounding paramo landscape and lying within driving distance of regional towns such as Riobamba; it is a prominent feature of the central Andean skyline.
- Geodetic significance: The summit is notable in geodesy because, due to the Earth's equatorial bulge, its summit point is the farthest point from the Earth's center, despite not being the highest above sea level.
- Climbing notes: Climbing Chimborazo requires high-altitude glacier experience and permits; weather is highly variable and the mountain is typically attempted with guide support and acclimatisation days.
How to Get to Chimborazo #
Chimborazo is visited via the Chimborazo Faunal Reserve, reached by road from the city of Riobamba (the usual base for climbs and visits). From Riobamba drive along the Panamericana (E35) and follow local provincial roads up toward the reserve; 4x4 vehicles are commonly used for higher-elevation access and there are marked parking/visitor areas from which hikes start. Summit attempts require technical climbing and guided approaches from the reserve access points.
Tips for Visiting Chimborazo #
- Attempt summit climbs only in the established dry season (generally June-September) to reduce exposure to storms and unstable weather at high altitude.
- Acclimatize in Riobamba or at intermediate altitudes before heading to the Whymper refuge and hire a certified local guide for any glacier or technical sections-the upper slopes are glaciated and require mountaineering experience and equipment.
- If you're not summiting, drive or hike to the lower viewpoints and the Carrel/Whymper approach for dramatic close-up views of Chimborazo without the technical climb; many day visitors miss the accessible panoramas by focusing solely on summit attempts.
Best Time to Visit Chimborazo #
Best to attempt Chimborazo (or visit its lower trails) during the dry season (June-September) when weather is most stable and visibility is better.
