Chiloé National Park
National Park Protected Chilean park preserving temperate rainforests and coastline
On Chiloé Island, the park protects temperate rainforests, peat bogs and fjords; hikers, sea kayakers and birdwatchers come for coastal trails, lenga woods and island wildlife.
Chiloé National Park is a protected area on the western coast of Chiloé Island in Chile’s Los Lagos Region, set aside to conserve temperate rainforest, coastline and island ecosystems. The park protects remnants of Valdivian-type temperate forest and a mosaic of beaches, peat bogs and coastal cliffs.
Trails range from short walks to multi-hour hikes that pass through dense evergreen forest and out to the coast, where visitors can find beaches, headlands and tide-dependent wildlife. The park is valued for its mix of forest habitats, coastal scenery and opportunities to see marine and birdlife.
The park was established in the late 20th century to protect the island’s native forests and shoreline. Management focuses on conservation, visitor access from established trailheads and protection of habitat for endemic species.
The park sits on the west side of Chiloé Island; the village of Cucao is the principal gateway and visitor settlement nearest the main trailheads. The landscape is characterised by low coastal ranges, dense forest and exposed shoreline facing the Pacific Ocean.
- Access: Main access is via the village of Cucao on Chiloé's west coast, which serves as the primary trailhead and visitor contact point.
- Best time to visit: Best hiking conditions are during the austral summer months when weather is milder and trails are more easily negotiated; expect frequent rain year round in this temperate rainforest climate.
What to See #
- Cucao sector: Cucao sector on the park's west coast contains the main visitor facilities and trailheads, and is the usual entry point for walking routes into the coastal forest and beaches.
- Coastal trails and beaches: Coastal trails and beaches lead to rocky headlands and viewpoints where walkers can observe exposed coastline and intertidal areas; several short marked trails start from the park entrances.
