Chiloé Island
Island Large island with distinctive wooden churches and folklore
Off Chile’s south coast, Chiloé mixes wooden churches (many UNESCO‑listed), colorful palafitos and a strong island food tradition-notably curanto. Tourists explore vernacular architecture, coastal birdlife and rural markets.
Chiloé Island is the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago in southern Chile’s Los Lagos Region, known for its distinctive wooden architecture, seafaring culture and island landscapes. The island’s set of wooden Catholic churches is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural ensemble.
The island offers colourful port towns, stilted houses along sheltered bays and numerous wooden churches built in local carpentry traditions; the UNESCO group comprises 16 churches distributed across the archipelago. Local museums, boat trips, artisanal markets and seafood cuisine are common visitor interests.
Colonial-era Jesuit and later Franciscan missions combined European timber-building techniques with local materials and craft traditions, producing the island’s characteristic churches and wooden civic buildings. Settlement patterns and maritime livelihoods have shaped the island’s culture from the colonial period to the present.
Chiloé lies off the southern Chilean Pacific coast within Los Lagos Region; principal towns on the island include Castro and Ancud, which serve as access points for visitors.
- UNESCO churches: Sixteen wooden churches from Chiloe are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage for their unique carpentry and blended indigenous-European building traditions.
What to See #
- Chilote wooden churches: A network of wooden churches across the island - 16 of these churches are recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage List for their timber construction and local craftsmanship.
- Castro and Ancud: The towns of Castro and Ancud feature distinctive stilt houses (palafitos), wooden market buildings and local museums that showcase island culture and history.
How to Get to Chiloé Island #
Chiloé Island is reached from mainland Chile by the vehicle ferry across the Chacao Channel. From Puerto Montt drive north on the Panamericana/Route 5 toward the Pargua ferry terminal and take the car ferry to Chacao on Chiloé (ferry crossings are about 30-40 minutes). Chiloé is also served by flights to Mocopulli Airport near Castro and by regular bus services from the Los Lagos mainland.
Tips for Visiting Chiloé Island #
- Use the Pargua-Chacao ferry as the main gateway link from the mainland and check the ferry schedule in advance-crossings are frequent but can be affected by weather.
- Rent a car or arrange local transport to reach dispersed UNESCO churches and coastal attractions-many of Chiloé's best sites (wooden churches, viewpoints and fishing villages) are spread out and poorly served by public transit.
- For a quieter experience, visit during weekdays and head beyond Castro and Dalcahue to smaller towns (e.g., Chonchi, Quemchi) where traditional churches and palafitos are more authentic and less crowded.
Best Time to Visit Chiloé Island #
Visit in southern summer (Dec-Feb) for the warmest, least rainy conditions and the best availability of ferries and tours.
