Chiemsee
Lake Large Bavarian lake with island palaces
Chiemsee in Bavaria centers on boat trips to Herrenchiemsee Palace and Fraueninsel, cycling around the lake, and seasonal markets; the islands’ 19th-century royal architecture and a Benedictine convent draw day-trippers from Munich.
Chiemsee is a large freshwater lake in Bavaria often called the “Bavarian Sea” and is noted for its islands and royal connections. The lake’s two principal islands, Herreninsel and Fraueninsel, are the main cultural attractions.
Ferries run from lakeside towns to the islands where visitors can tour Herrenchiemsee Palace on Herreninsel and the monastic village on Fraueninsel. The shoreline offers promenades, boating, swimming in summer and panoramic views of the Bavarian foothills.
The islands have long been settled; the present Herrenchiemsee palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II in the late 19th century as a monumental project inspired by Versailles. Fraueninsel’s Benedictine community and village preserve a much older ecclesiastical and fishing tradition.
Chiemsee lies in southeastern Bavaria, with lakeside towns and ferry connections serving visitors from the surrounding Bavarian region.
- Herrenchiemsee palace start date: The island palace project on Herreninsel was started by King Ludwig II in 1878 as an homage to the Palace of Versailles and remains a major visitor attraction.
- Access by ferry: Regular ferry services connect the lakeshore towns to the islands and are the normal way for visitors to reach the palace and monastery islands.
What to See #
- Herreninsel (Herrenchiemsee): Herreninsel (Herrenchiemsee) is the largest island and site of **Herrenchiemsee Palace**, a grand 19th-century royal palace begun by King Ludwig II as a replica reference to Versailles; construction started in 1878.
- Fraueninsel: Fraueninsel is a smaller inhabited island with a historic Benedictine convent and a small village, retaining a rural island character and local artisan shops.
How to Get to Chiemsee #
From Munich Hauptbahnhof take a regional train (DB/Regional services) to Prien am Chiemsee (journey about one hour). From Prien station it’s a short walk to the harbor where regular passenger ferries run to Herreninsel and Fraueninsel (ferry crossings typically 10-15 minutes). By car follow the A8 toward Rosenheim/Salzburg and take local roads into Prien to reach the lakefront ferry terminals.
Tips for Visiting Chiemsee #
- Catch one of the earliest ferries from Prien am Chiemsee to Herreninsel to tour the palace and grounds before the big tour boats arrive mid‑morning.
- Don't skip Fraueninsel (the small island with the Benedictine convent) - it's quieter, has artisan shops and a different, more intimate lakeside character than Herreninsel.
- Use the Prien ferry terminal rather than smaller private launches; ferries run frequently and let you hop between islands easily, helping you avoid the busiest single‑island crowds.
Best Time to Visit Chiemsee #
Best in summer for warm weather and lake activities, with spring and autumn offering milder temperatures and fewer crowds.
