Chiemgau Alps

Mountains Mountain range in Bavaria popular for hiking

Bavarian Alpine range between Lake Chiemsee and the Austrian border; visitors hike summer trails, ski in winter and stay in mountain villages.

The Chiemgau Alps are a sub-range of the Northern Limestone Alps in southeastern Bavaria, Germany, known for rugged limestone peaks and alpine meadows. The range includes multiple popular hiking and climbing summits and borders the Chiemsee lake region.

Peak highlights include summits that reach nearly 2,000 metres, with marked trails, ridges and local ski areas used in winter. The terrain offers a mix of day-hike routes, via ferrata sections and longer mountain tours.

Geologically the range is composed mainly of limestone and dolomite characteristic of the Northern Limestone Alps. Traditional alpine agriculture, summer pastures and mountain huts are common on lower slopes.

Geographically the Chiemgau Alps lie in Bavaria near the Austrian border, east of the Chiemsee and within reach of towns such as Traunstein and Ruhpolding; they form part of the eastern Bavarian pre-Alpine landscape.

  • Alpine character: Part of the Northern Limestone Alps, featuring steep limestone faces, alpine pastures and a mix of hiking and winter-sport opportunities.

  • Sonntagshorn: The highest summit in the range, reaching approximately 1,961 metres and popular with hikers for panoramic views over surrounding valleys and lakes.

  • Hochgern: A prominent peak rising to roughly 1,748 metres with marked hiking trails and alpine meadows on its slopes.

Tips for Visiting Chiemgau Alps #

  • Pick a single valley or lake to explore in a day (Chiemsee, Kössen/Tegernsee, Ruhpolding) rather than trying to cover the whole range.
  • Use local alpine huts (Almen) to break up hikes - they offer hearty food and the chance to sit where shepherds once grazed cattle.
  • If skiing, check small local lift operators rather than the big resorts for quieter slopes and cheaper day passes.
