Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known crossing point between the U.S. and Soviet sectors of divided Berlin, established in 1961 at Friedrichstrasse and widely used as a Cold War symbol of the city’s division.
The site today features a replica guardhouse and interpretive panels; a nearby museum documents the Berlin Wall and escape attempts. The location is often photographed and visited by those studying Cold War history and postwar Berlin.
Checkpoint Charlie was set up during the Berlin Wall era as a controlled crossing for foreigners and allied personnel and featured prominently in Cold War confrontations and negotiations. After German reunification the crossing ceased to operate and the area was redeveloped with memorials and exhibitions.
The crossing stood on Friedrichstrasse in the Mitte neighbourhood of central Berlin, between what were formerly the American and Soviet sectors and within easy walking distance of other central landmarks.
