Chavín de Huántar is a major pre-Columbian ceremonial centre in the Ancash highlands, associated with the Chavín culture and dated broadly to about 900-200 BCE. It is famed for its stone architecture, carved sculpture and complex underground galleries.
Finely carved stone iconography, the central carved monolith known as the Lanzón, underground galleries and sophisticated stone drainage incorporated into the temple architecture. The site served as a regional ceremonial hub with ritual plazas and sculptured spaces.
The complex was constructed and modified by the Chavín culture during the first millennium BCE and continued to be an important ritual centre over several centuries; modern archaeological study began in the early 20th century and has documented multiple building phases and restorations.
Chavín de Huántar lies in a mountain valley of the Department of Ancash, roughly 200 km north of Lima and reachable from the regional city of Huaraz and nearby highland towns.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its importance as a major ceremonial centre of the Chavín culture.
What to See #
- Old Temple (ceremonial complex): The Old Temple contains carved stone heads, the famous carved Lanzón monolith and carved galleries with drainage systems and narrow passageways beneath the platform.
- New Temple and plazas: The New Temple and surrounding plazas show later enlargement and overlaying construction phases, reflecting the site's long ceremonial use by the Chavín culture.
Tips for Visiting Chavín de Huántar #
- Arrive at opening and tour the ruins in the cool morning hours-afternoon in the highlands brings more cloud and rain, so mornings give clearer views and better photos.
- Begin your visit at the site's visitor center/interpretive displays to get context before exploring the temple complex and help you identify the major features on the ground plan.
- Make time to explore the subterranean galleries and carved stone sculptures around the main temple-these architectural and acoustic features are easy to miss if you only view the site from the outer platforms.
- Remember the site sits above 3,000 m (around 3,180 m) so allow time to acclimatize in the town before doing longer walks on uneven terrain.
