Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Castle Hilltop medieval Alsace castle extensively restored
Haut‑Koenigsbourg castle crowns an Alsace hill with reconstructed medieval rooms, armory displays and wide views over the Rhine plain; visitors tour preserved ramparts, period interiors and the mountain approach.
The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is a restored medieval castle perched on a sandstone ridge in the northern Vosges in Grand Est, France, with origins in the 12th century and a major restoration completed in the early 20th century. It is one of the most-visited historic castles in Alsace and is set in a commanding position over the surrounding plain.
The site includes fortified walls, towers, a keep and a sequence of furnished rooms and defensive works that visitors can walk through; the ramparts give extensive views across the Alsace plain, toward the Rhine valley and, when visibility is good, to the Black Forest. Interiors include reconstructed reception rooms, kitchens and armory displays, and many visit routes follow the circuit of fortifications.
Originally constructed in the medieval period, the castle was repeatedly altered and was destroyed in the 17th century during the Thirty Years War. It lay in ruins for centuries before the extensive restoration programme commissioned by the German Emperor Wilhelm II and executed by architect Bodo Ebhardt between 1900 and 1908, which produced much of the present visible fabric and layout.
The château sits above the village of Orschwiller in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, on a prominent Vosges ridge. It is accessed by road from nearby towns in the Sélestat area and serves as a landmark visible across the lower Rhine plain.
- Major restoration: the present appearance is largely the result of a major restoration carried out for Kaiser Wilhelm II between 1900 and 1908 by the German architect Bodo Ebhardt.
- Viewpoints: popular for panoramic photography - the castle sits high above the Alsace plain and offers long-distance views on clear days.
What to See #
