Château de Montségur
Castle Remote Cathar fortress and site of historic siege
Montségur sits atop a steep Pyrénées outcrop as the ruin of a 13th-century Cathar fortress, known for its dramatic siege history and exposed summit location.
Château de Montségur is a ruined medieval fortress and Cathar stronghold in the Ariège department of Occitania in southern France, famous for its role in the Albigensian Crusade and the 1244 siege.
The site consists chiefly of the stone remains of the hilltop castle perched on a rocky pog, reached by a marked trail from the village of Montségur. The ruined enceinte and remnants of the keep occupy the summit and offer panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenean foothills; the climb to the ruins is steep and can take about 20-30 minutes on foot. A small museum in the village presents artifacts and displays about the Cathars and the 13th-century siege.
The fortress served as a major refuge for Cathars in the early 13th century and endured a siege that ended in March 1244 with the fall of the stronghold. The medieval fortress was later left in ruin; the visible remains date primarily from the period around the 13th century and subsequent partial rebuilds and repairs.
The château crowns the commune of Montségur in the Ariège, in the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees. It lies in a rural, mountainous landscape in southern France, accessible from Foix and other towns in the region.
- Access: The ruined fortress sits on a steep limestone outcrop at roughly 1,200 metres above sea level and requires a 20-30 minute walk from the village below.
- On-site information: A small museum and information panels in the village explain the Cathar beliefs and the 1244 siege that made the site historically significant.
