Château de Fougères
Castle Large medieval fortress in Brittany with ramparts
Fougères’ castle complex features extensive medieval walls and towers; visitors walk ramparts, visit the keep and explore the feeding streets of the Breton town.
Château de Fougères is a major medieval fortress located in the town of Fougères, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. It is noted for the scale of its surviving defensive works and its prominent position within the town.
The complex comprises extensive curtain walls, multiple towers and defensive enclosures that visitors can walk around and, in places, on top of. The ramparts give wide views over Fougères and the surrounding countryside; the overall footprint of the fortified area is large compared with typical Norman or Angevin castles.
A fortification has stood on the site since the medieval period; the castle was developed and rebuilt across the 11th to 15th centuries as defensive needs evolved. It played a role in regional conflicts during the Middle Ages and later periods before coming under preservation as an historic monument.
The castle sits within the built fabric of the town of Fougères in northeastern Brittany, roughly 45-55 km east-northeast of Rennes and connected by regional roads and rail links.
- Ramparts and viewpoints: Curtain walls and towers provide elevated walkways that give good views across the town of Fougères and the surrounding countryside; these are best visited in clear weather.
- Scale: One of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe in terms of its surviving curtain walls and number of defensive elements, so allow time to walk the site.
