The Château de Châlus-Chabrol is a medieval fortress in the commune of Châlus in western France, with origins in the 11th and 12th centuries. It is historically notable as the location where King Richard I was mortally wounded in 1199.
Remains of the keep, curtain walls and defensive structures stand above the town, offering a relatively compact ruin to explore. The site retains clear medieval masonry and provides interpretive information about the siege that led to Richard I’s injury.
Constructed in the high medieval period, the castle served as a feudal stronghold and was involved in regional conflicts. The 1199 siege during which Richard I was struck marks the site’s most famous historical event; the castle later fell into ruin and has been preserved as a historical monument.
Set on a rocky outcrop above the village of Châlus in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the castle overlooks the surrounding rural landscape and is accessible from nearby Limoges.
