Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
Castle 13th-century fortress with arms museum in Dordogne
Opposite Beynac on the Dordogne, Château de Castelnaud hosts a museum of medieval warfare; visitors examine reconstructed siege engines, arms collections and panoramic river views.
Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is a restored medieval fortress on the Dordogne’s south bank, best known today as a museum of medieval warfare. The site interprets military technology and castle life with extensive displays and reconstructions.
The principal attraction is the museum collection of arms and armor and the reconstructed siege engines, including working-scale trebuchets and other machines demonstrated on site. Visitors can also climb the keep and battlements for views across the river toward Château de Beynac.
Originally built in the 12th century and modified in subsequent medieval centuries, the castle changed hands during regional conflicts; it fell into ruin and was restored in the 20th century when the museum programme was established. Modern conservation has focused on both the architectural fabric and the interpretive displays.
Located in the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle on the south bank of the Dordogne River, the château sits directly opposite Château de Beynac, within the Dordogne department of southwestern France.
- Siege engine displays: Home to one of France's most comprehensive public collections on medieval military technology, with functional reconstructions of siege engines visible from the battlements.
- Paired visits: Often paired on the same visit with nearby Château de Beynac, which stands directly across the Dordogne River.
