Main image

The Château de Bonaguil is a fortified castle in the Lot-et-Garonne department of southwestern France, built and modified between the 13th and 16th centuries. It is widely cited as a major example of late medieval military architecture adapted to the age of artillery.

Originating in the Middle Ages, the castle was substantially upgraded in the 15th and early 16th centuries with reinforced outer walls and artillery platforms to meet evolving defensive needs. It was abandoned as a military site later and preserved as a historical monument.

Bonaguil perches above the Dordogne/Lot border region in rural Nouvelle-Aquitaine, surrounded by farmland and woodlands. The fortress is accessed from the nearby village and is within driving distance of Fumel and other regional towns.

  • Military architecture: One of France's best-preserved late medieval fortresses, with substantial outer works specifically adapted for artillery defense.

What to See #

  • Defensive ensemble: The château comprises a central keep and a complex outer enceinte with multiple towers, a barbican and artillery platforms that illustrate late medieval and early Renaissance military design.
