Château de Bonaguil
Castle Well-preserved medieval fortress in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Bonaguil in Nouvelle‑Aquitaine is a large late‑medieval fortress with concentric walls and towers; tourists arrive for guided tours of its defensive works and seasonal historical demonstrations.
The Château de Bonaguil is a fortified castle in the Lot-et-Garonne department of southwestern France, built and modified between the 13th and 16th centuries. It is widely cited as a major example of late medieval military architecture adapted to the age of artillery.
Originating in the Middle Ages, the castle was substantially upgraded in the 15th and early 16th centuries with reinforced outer walls and artillery platforms to meet evolving defensive needs. It was abandoned as a military site later and preserved as a historical monument.
Bonaguil perches above the Dordogne/Lot border region in rural Nouvelle-Aquitaine, surrounded by farmland and woodlands. The fortress is accessed from the nearby village and is within driving distance of Fumel and other regional towns.
