Chartres Cathedral
Church Masterpiece Gothic cathedral renowned for medieval stained glass
Chartres Cathedral attracts visitors for one of the finest intact ensembles of 12th-13th‑century stained glass, a sculpted west façade and the medieval labyrinth - pilgrims and architecture students come to study its craftsmanship.
Chartres Cathedral is a medieval Gothic cathedral in Chartres, Centre-Val de Loire, renowned for its preserved medieval architecture and stained glass. The current cathedral dates mainly from the rebuilding after the 1194 fire.
The interior presents a high-vaulted nave and choir, extensive 12th- and 13th-century stained-glass windows and sculpted portal façades on three sides of the building. Many visitors come to study the glazing program, the iconography of the portals and the cathedral’s intact Gothic plan.
Following a destructive fire in 1194 the cathedral was rebuilt rapidly in the early 13th century to a unified Gothic design; later medieval and post-medieval additions altered towers and some chapels. The building has been a continuous place of worship and pilgrimage and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sited in the historic center of Chartres, the cathedral dominates the town and is visible from the surrounding agricultural plain; Chartres lies about 90 kilometres southwest of Paris.
- Construction period: Largely rebuilt between 1194 and 1220 after a major fire, it retains an exceptional set of medieval stained-glass windows and sculpted portal programs.
- Exterior features: The cathedral's two spires and three principal façades are key exterior landmarks visible across the surrounding flatlands.
What to See #
- Nave and Choir: Long vaulted nave and choir forming the principal interior axis, largely rebuilt after the 1194 fire and completed in the early 13th century.
- Stained-glass Windows: Extensive medieval stained-glass program in the clerestory and chapels, with much of the glazing dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.
- Crypt: Subterranean crypt and lower-level chapels that preserve earlier masonry and sculptural fragments from pre-13th-century structures.

Tips for Visiting Chartres Cathedral #
- Visit in the early morning for clearer light through the stained-glass windows and significantly fewer visitors than mid-day; the cathedral interior is compact so crowds build quickly.
- If you can, time an evening visit during the Chartres en Lumières season (typically spring-autumn) to see the building and nearby streets transformed by the nightly light project-this is a different way to experience the site.
- Ask at the welcome desk about guided climbs of the tower or scheduled visits to the crypt and treasury-these access options are limited and often overlooked by those who only enter the nave.
Best Time to Visit Chartres Cathedral #
Visit Chartres in spring or early autumn for comfortable weather and smaller crowds; winter offers the quietest interior experience.
