Chan Chan
Archaeological Site Largest pre-Columbian adobe city in Americas
Chan Chan, the Chimu capital near Trujillo, is the largest pre-Columbian adobe city; visitors study carved mud walls, courtyards and the on-site museum with guided tours explaining coastal trade.
Chan Chan is the archaeological remains of the capital city of the Chimú state on Peru’s northern coast, located near Trujillo. It is notable as the largest prehistoric adobe city in the Americas and an important example of pre-Inca urban planning.
Extensive complexes of high adobe walls enclosing palaces, administrative compounds and sunken ceremonial plazas decorated with carved reliefs. Visitors can walk among preserved sections of façades and see repetitive geometric and marine motifs that adorned Chimú architecture.
Open-air pathways lead through multiple walled compounds and provide views of eroded friezes and storage courtyards; a site museum provides additional finds and interpretation. Conservation works and protective shelters are visible throughout the ruins due to the fragile nature of the adobe structures.
Built and expanded by the Chimú culture in the pre-Columbian period, Chan Chan served as the political and religious centre of the Chimú kingdom until its conquest by the Inca in the late 15th century. The city was later affected by Spanish colonial neglect and modern threats from weathering and urban pressure, prompting ongoing preservation efforts.
Situated on the coastal plain a few kilometres west of the city of Trujillo in La Libertad Region, Chan Chan sits near the present urban fringe and is commonly reached from Trujillo as a short drive.
- UNESCO and scale: The site is the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in the Americas and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its archaeological and cultural significance.
What to See #
- Walled citadels and palaces: A vast network of adobe walled compounds and palaces forming the remains of the Chimú capital, with decorative friezes and sunken plazas across the site.
- Museo de Sitio (Visitor museum): A small on-site museum and visitor centre presenting artifacts recovered from excavations and offering context on Chimú society and conservation efforts.
How to Get to Chan Chan #
Chan Chan is just outside Trujillo and is reached easily from Trujillo city center - it is roughly 5-10 km from central Trujillo (about a 15-25 minute drive). Take a taxi or local bus/colectivo heading toward Huanchaco/La Libertad along the Panamericana Norte corridor and ask to be dropped at the archaeological complex entrance.
There is a short walk from the local road/stop to the visitor areas and museum at the site.
Tips for Visiting Chan Chan #
- Arrive in the morning when temperatures are cooler and guided groups are smaller; mid‑day sun can make the adobe structures harder to appreciate.
- Book a guided visit from Trujillo so you can interpret the carved friezes and urban layout - many visitors walk the compounds but miss the iconography and preservation work without explanation.
- Combine Chan Chan with a short stop at nearby Huanchaco (fishing village) in the late afternoon for a quieter sense of the coastal landscape that supported the Chimú capital.
