Main image

Cerro de la Neblina is a remote tepui massif in Amazonas state, Venezuela, part of the Serranía de la Neblina on the Guiana Shield and notable for its high, cloud-shrouded plateaus. The massif is one of the most remote highland areas in northern South America and contains significant biodiversity and endemism.

The area supports cloud forest, tepui plateau ecosystems and numerous flowing rivers and waterfalls carved into the sandstone massif. The complex topography and persistent mist give the range its name and make it an important site for biological and geological research.

The Serranía de la Neblina area was placed under formal protection in the late 20th century to conserve its ecosystems and restrict development. The massif has been the focus of biological expeditions and scientific surveys because of its isolation and unique flora and fauna.

Geographically, the massif sits in southern Amazonas state along the Venezuela-Brazil border, within the Guiana Shield. The terrain is remote and largely accessible only by long river journeys and multi-day foot expeditions originating from regional river towns.

  • Highest point: The massif straddles the Venezuela-Brazil frontier and includes Pico da Neblina, which rises to about 2,995 meters on the Brazilian side.
  • Access and logistics: Access is remote and logistically demanding; expeditions typically require river travel and extended trekking and are subject to permits and controls.

What to See #

  • Pico da Neblina: A summit in the massif that reaches 2,995 meters and is the highest point of the Neblina massif on the Brazilian side of the border.
