Central Suriname Nature Reserve

The Central Suriname Nature Reserve is a vast protected area in the interior of Suriname that conserves extensive tracts of lowland and upland tropical rainforest and distinctive table mountains. It is recognised for its size and high level of ecological integrity.

Visitors come for wilderness experiences such as guided river trips, visits to tepuis and waterfalls, and wildlife and birdwatching; access is limited to a few established routes and landing sites to minimise impact. The reserve contains notable geological features like flat-topped sandstone mountains and river cataracts, which support diverse habitats.

The reserve was designated to conserve core rainforest ecosystems of central Suriname and is managed to protect biodiversity and indigenous landscapes, with limited low-impact tourism infrastructure.

Geographically it sits in central Suriname, spanning remote interior districts and covering a very large area of contiguous forest accessible mainly by river or by small aircraft to cleared landing strips.

• Raleighvallen and waterways: Rivers and waterfall systems, including the Raleighvallen area, that support diverse wildlife and are accessed by guided river trips and air landings.
