The Central Suriname Nature Reserve is a vast protected area in the interior of Suriname that conserves extensive tracts of lowland and upland tropical rainforest and distinctive table mountains. It is recognised for its size and high level of ecological integrity.

Visitors come for wilderness experiences such as guided river trips, visits to tepuis and waterfalls, and wildlife and birdwatching; access is limited to a few established routes and landing sites to minimise impact. The reserve contains notable geological features like flat-topped sandstone mountains and river cataracts, which support diverse habitats.

The reserve was designated to conserve core rainforest ecosystems of central Suriname and is managed to protect biodiversity and indigenous landscapes, with limited low-impact tourism infrastructure.

Geographically it sits in central Suriname, spanning remote interior districts and covering a very large area of contiguous forest accessible mainly by river or by small aircraft to cleared landing strips.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: The reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its large, largely intact tract of tropical rainforest and high biodiversity.
  • Remoteness and access: It covers a very large area of central Suriname and is remote; access is primarily by boat or small aircraft to designated landing sites.

What to See #

  • Tafelberg: Tafelberg, a flat-topped sandstone table mountain that is one of the reserve's distinctive geological landmarks and offers scenic viewpoints.
  • Raleighvallen and waterways: Rivers and waterfall systems, including the Raleighvallen area, that support diverse wildlife and are accessed by guided river trips and air landings.

How to Get to Central Suriname Nature Reserve #

The Central Suriname Nature Reserve is a large, remote interior reserve in Brokopondo District with very limited road access. Access is normally arranged from Paramaribo via charter flights to small interior airstrips or as part of organized expeditions using river boats and forest tracks; reaching sites inside the reserve typically requires several hours of river travel or overland expedition travel and must be planned with an authorized operator.

Tips for Visiting Central Suriname Nature Reserve #

  • Access to the Central Suriname Nature Reserve typically requires booking a multi‑day guided trip from Paramaribo by charter plane or river transport-there are no regular road connections, so confirm transport and permits with your operator well ahead.
  • Plan travel in the region's drier months when river levels and trails are more navigable, and build in extra travel time-transfers inside the reserve can be weather‑dependent and operators often include several days to reach key sites.
  • Ask your outfitter about specific wildlife hotspots and canopy or river platforms; these vantage points are often less‑visited within the reserve but require prior arrangement through guides.
