Céide Fields
Archaeological Site Ancient Neolithic field complex preserved under peat
On County Mayo’s north coast, the Céide Fields display Neolithic stone walls and house platforms beneath peat; a visitor centre explains excavations and visitors walk boardwalk trails over windswept bog and coastal views.
The Céide Fields are a Neolithic archaeological complex on the northwest coast of County Mayo, Ireland, notable for extensive stone field walls and other prehistoric agricultural remains. Radiocarbon dating places the main activity there around 3500 BCE.
The site preserves stone-built field systems, tombs and house sites preserved beneath blanket peat, visible across the coastal landscape. A visitor centre provides exhibitions, walking trails and a viewing tower to survey the surrounding patterns of field walls.
The fields were revealed and investigated in the 20th century when peat cutting and archaeological excavation exposed the buried stone walls; research has shown they represent some of the earliest organized agrarian landscapes in Ireland.
The complex lies along the Atlantic coast north of the village of Ballycastle in north County Mayo, set in a low, peat-covered landscape with coastal views.
- Visitor centre and trails: Archaeological features such as peat-covered field walls, stone cashels and tombs are exposed and interpreted at a visitor centre that also runs trails and a viewing tower.
How to Get to Céide Fields #
The Céide Fields and its visitor centre are on the north Mayo coast near the village of Ballycastle in County Mayo. The site is most conveniently reached by car (visitor parking available); local bus services are limited so drive or join a guided tour from larger towns. Allow a drive of under an hour from larger west‑Co. Mayo towns (times vary by start point). Walking trails start at the visitor centre.
Tips for Visiting Céide Fields #
- Start at the Céide Fields Visitor Centre and join a guided walk-interpretive walks from the centre are the best way to see the exposed stone field walls and peat profiles that are not obvious from roadside viewpoints.
- Visit in late spring or early summer for longer daylight and clearer weather for cliff-top views; the site's remote western Mayo location rewards an early start to avoid afternoon cloud and visitor peaks.
- Don't miss the visitor-centre displays: the pollen and peat-core exhibits explain how the landscape developed and many visitors overlook these interpretive displays when they go straight to the field platforms and cliff-edge viewpoints.
