Main image

Cefalù Cathedral is a 12th-century Norman cathedral on the northern coast of Sicily, begun under King Roger II and notable for its extensive Byzantine-style mosaics. It forms one of the principal medieval monuments in Cefalù and is included in a UNESCO World Heritage group of Norman-era churches.

Construction was begun under Norman rule in the early 12th century, traditionally dated to the reign of Roger II, as part of his program of ecclesiastical building in Sicily. Over subsequent centuries the cathedral received later additions and conservation work while preserving its medieval mosaics and Romanesque fabric.

The cathedral stands at the base of La Rocca overlooking the old town and beach of Cefalù on Sicily’s northern shore, roughly an hour’s drive east of Palermo by road.

  • UNESCO group listing: Part of the UNESCO inscription 'Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale' (inscribed 2015), recognised for its Norman architecture and Byzantine mosaics.
  • Must-see viewpoint: The apse mosaic of Christ Pantokrator is the cathedral's highlight and is best viewed from the nave centre where the mosaic dominates the eastern end of the church.

What to See #

  • Nave and apse mosaics: The cathedral's nave and apse contain the famous Byzantine-style mosaic of Christ Pantokrator and extensive mosaics dating to the 12th century, forming the primary artistic attraction.
  • Cloister and treasury: The cathedral shares a complex with cloistered spaces and later additions; the adjoining cloister and treasury hold religious objects and manuscripts from the collection.
  • Façade and towers: Twin towers flank the western façade and are integral features of the Norman-Romanesque architecture visible from the town seafront.
