Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst
Nature Reserve Extensive karst cave systems with spectacular stalactite formations
The cross‑border Aggtelek and Slovak Karst contain extensive dripstone caves, karst ridges and subterranean passages; guided tours reveal stalactite formations, and hikers use surface trails through mixed forests.
The Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst form a transboundary karst landscape straddling northeastern Hungary and southern Slovakia, notable for an extensive cave network and outstanding speleothems. The property includes major cave systems, wide karst plateaus and surface karst features forming one of the most important karst areas in Europe.
Prominent features include the long Baradla-Domica cave system with kilometres of galleries and rich dripstone decoration, and caves such as the Ochtinska1 Aragonite Cave known for rare aragonite formations. The subterranean environments show a variety of speleothem types and cave morphology created by dissolution of limestone and complex hydrogeological processes.
Cave exploration and mapping have been ongoing since the 19th century; many caves were developed as show caves in the 19th and 20th centuries while others remain scientifically important and protected. The area has been managed cooperatively across the two countries to conserve geological, hydrological and biological cave values.
Geographically the site covers karst plateaus and valleys in the Carpathian foreland north of the Hungarian plain and south of the Slovak highlands, with access from nearby towns such as Aggtelek in Hungary and Roa0žnava in Slovakia.
- Transboundary karst region: The property spans the border between northeastern Hungary and southern Slovakia and includes extensive karst plateaus with over a thousand mapped caves in the wider region.
- Visitor access: Several caves offer guided show-cave routes, but many significant cave systems are protected and accessible only with permits or on scientific tours.
