Cave of El Castillo
Archaeological Site Cave with Paleolithic art and ancient handprints
In Cantabria, the Cave of El Castillo contains Paleolithic paintings and hand stencils among Europe’s oldest cave art; visits concentrate on archaeological significance and guided tours of the karst landscape.
The Cave of El Castillo is a Paleolithic cave in Cantabria, northern Spain, renowned for its prehistoric parietal art dating to the Upper Paleolithic. It forms part of the Monte Castillo cave complex near the town of Puente Viesgo.
The cave contains multiple painted motifs including red disks, hand stencils and animal figures, executed using pigment and stencil techniques characteristic of Paleolithic cave art. Some of the red-painted motifs have been dated to at least about 40,000 years ago, making them among the oldest known cave paintings in Europe.
Archaeological work has documented the stratigraphy, art panels and occupation layers; the site contributes to understanding of early symbolic behaviour in late Pleistocene Europe. Preservation and scientific study have been priorities, resulting in controlled visitor access.
The cave lies in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains in Cantabria, a short drive from the town of Puente Viesgo and the city of Santander on Spain’s northern coast.
- Age of the art: Uranium-thorium dating of mineral deposits over some motifs has shown paintings in the cave are at least around 40,000 years old, placing them among the earliest known cave paintings in Europe.
- Access and protection: The site is part of the Monte Castillo cave complex near Puente Viesgo and is included in heritage initiatives that restrict unsupervised access to protect the art.
What to See #
- Red-disk panel: A painted panel dominated by red disks and symbols that includes one of the oldest reliably dated pieces of cave art in Europe, produced in the Upper Paleolithic.
- Hand-stencil sector: A sector of negative handprints and stencilled hands alongside animal motifs and painted signs, representing a variety of Paleolithic painting techniques.

Tips for Visiting Cave of El Castillo #
- Access to El Castillo is by guided tour only and daily visitor numbers are strictly limited-book a specific tour slot in advance through the Cantabria prehistoric cave network or the Puente Viesgo visitor centre to guarantee entry.
