The Cathedral of the Assumption in Gozo is the principal cathedral on the island and the seat of the Diocese of Gozo. It is a Baroque church rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake and forms the centerpiece of the Citadel in Victoria (Rabat).
Inside, the cathedral is noted for its richly decorated Baroque interior and major altarpieces, and the attached museum displays silverware, vestments and other liturgical objects. The cathedral and its museum are central to Gozo’s religious and cultural heritage.
The present building dates from the late 17th and early 18th centuries when much of the island’s ecclesiastical architecture was rebuilt in Baroque form under the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà. It has been the episcopal seat for the island’s diocese since the diocese was established in the 19th century.
