Cathedral of Syracuse

Cathedral of Syracuse (Duomo di Siracusa) sits on Ortigia island and is built over the remains of a 5th-century BC Doric temple dedicated to Athena. The surviving Greek columns have been incorporated into the cathedral fabric and are visible in the nave and exterior walls.

Visitors typically note the contrast between the ancient stone columns and the cathedral’s Baroque exterior, which resulted from extensive rebuilding after the 1693 earthquake. Interior highlights include multiple chapels and decorative altars that record medieval, Renaissance and Baroque phases of renovation.

The original temple foundations date to the classical period and were Christianised in late antiquity; the building was adapted repeatedly, with major Baroque remodelling in the 18th century following seismic damage.

The cathedral occupies the central square of Ortigia, the historic heart of Syracuse, adjacent to other civic and archaeological landmarks and within walking distance of the seafront.
