Main image

The Cathedral of St. Elizabeth is a Gothic cathedral in the city centre of Košice in eastern Slovakia and is the largest church in the country. Its architecture, sculpted portals and vaulted interior identify it as the city’s principal medieval landmark.

The building was constructed principally between the 14th and 16th centuries and incorporates Gothic vaults, stained glass and a range of medieval and later interior chapels. It functions as the seat of the local diocese and as a focal point for religious and civic ceremonies in Košice.

Over centuries the cathedral has been repaired, refurnished and adapted, but it retains its principal Gothic form and decorative program. It occupies Cathedral Square in the core of Košice’s historic centre.

  • Largest church in Slovakia: Recognised as the largest church in Slovakia and the main Gothic landmark of Košice.
