Cathedral of Saint Domnius
Religious Site Split cathedral within Diocletian's Palace, ancient Roman basilica
Within Diocletian’s Palace in Split, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius occupies a converted Roman mausoleum. Visitors climb the bell tower for city and harbour views and study Roman architecture.
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius sits within the UNESCO-listed complex of Diocletian’s Palace in central Split and is the city’s cathedral and a key historic monument. Its core was built as the Roman mausoleum for Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century and was rededicated as a Christian cathedral in the 7th century to Saint Domnius.
Architectural highlights include the well-preserved octagonal mausoleum, the Romanesque and Gothic cathedral additions, and a tall bell tower that was constructed in stages from the 12th to the 16th centuries. The cathedral contains relics and liturgical furnishings and is an active place of worship as well as a major visitor attraction.
The site evolved from an imperial mausoleum into the bishop’s church during the early medieval period; subsequent centuries added chapels, the nave and the bell tower. Restoration and archaeological work in the 19th and 20th centuries revealed and conserved many original Roman and medieval elements.
The cathedral stands on the eastern side of Split’s Peristyle within Diocletian’s Palace, adjacent to the Riva waterfront and a short walk from the city’s harbour and train station.
