The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Galway, located on the banks of the River Corrib in the city centre and completed in the mid-20th century.

The cathedral is noted for its large dome and modern classical design compared with Ireland’s older medieval cathedrals. It is a focal point for diocesan liturgies and civic ceremonies and is visible from several central points along the river.

Designed in the 20th century by architect John J. Robinson and finished in the 1960s, the building replaced earlier parish churches as the principal cathedral for the area. It was consecrated and opened for diocesan use upon completion in the mid-1960s.

Located in central Galway, the cathedral sits close to the River Corrib and within easy walking distance of the city’s main commercial streets and historic quarter.

  • Location tip: Sits on the banks of the River Corrib close to Galway city centre, making it easy to combine with walks along the river and nearby historic sites.
