Cathedral of Faro
Church Medieval cathedral at Faro's old town square
Inside Faro’s old town, the cathedral (Sé) shelters a mix of architectural phases; visitors climb the bell tower for views over the walled streets and the Ria Formosa marshes.
The Cathedral of Faro (Sé de Faro) is the main Roman Catholic church of Faro in Portugal’s Algarve and holds a prominent position within the city’s old town. Its origins date to the medieval period but the building shows later Baroque and post-earthquake alterations.
The cathedral contains a mixture of architectural elements and an interior with chapels, religious art and carved furniture typical of a cathedral that evolved over centuries. Visitors commonly pair a visit to the cathedral with walks through the adjoining medieval streets and the old city walls.
Founded on the site of an earlier medieval church, the cathedral underwent significant repairs and reconstruction after damage sustained in seismic events, notably following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that affected many Algarve churches. Subsequent restorations shaped the current appearance.
Sited in Faro’s Cidade Velha (Old Town), the cathedral stands close to seafront avenues and the main historic gateways of the city in the Faro district of southern Portugal.
