Catedral de Mármol
Reservoir Spectacular marble cave cathedral on turquoise lake
On Lake General Carrera, the Marble Cathedral displays wave‑carved marble caverns and arches. Boat and kayak trips from Puerto Río Tranquilo let visitors enter sculpted chambers and study reflections on glacial lake water.
The Catedral de Mármol are a group of marble caverns and sculpted formations on the shoreline of General Carrera Lake in Chile’s Aysén Region. The features are formed in crystalline limestone and marble and are valued for their smooth, colourful surfaces and arched cavities.
A boat cruise into the caverns reveals polished walls, narrow passages and open ‘chapel’ chambers where water action has hollowed and smoothed the rock into sculptural forms. The caves are compact and normally visited as short excursions from the lakeshore.
The caverns were formed by wave erosion acting on marble and limestone over thousands of years; there is no built history associated with the formations beyond their recent development as a local tourist attraction. Boats and small piers developed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to enable guided access.
The formations lie on the southern shores of General Carrera Lake (known in Argentina as Lake Buenos Aires) in the Aysén Region of southern Chile and are typically reached by road to Puerto Río Tranquilo followed by a short boat trip across the lake.
- Access: Access is by boat from Puerto Río Tranquilo on General Carrera / Lake Buenos Aires; visits are weather dependent and guided boats provide the standard access route.
What to See #
- Primary caverns: The main caverns on the lake shoreline form elegant marble-walled grottoes with polished surfaces and arches carved by wave action, accessible only by boat.
- Secondary chambers and passages: Smaller adjacent chambers and sculpted columns create a sequence of caves and passageways favoured for short boat excursions from nearby piers.
How to Get to Catedral de Mármol #
The Catedral de Mármol (Marble Cathedral) is on Lake General Carrera near the village of Puerto Río Tranquilo in Aysén. The typical route is by road on the Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) to Puerto Río Tranquilo, then by short boat excursions from the lakeside pier to the marble caves. Road travel from regional centers (for example Coyhaique) is several hours; boat trips depart from the town’s harbor and landings are a short walk from the pier.
Tips for Visiting Catedral de Mármol #
- Take an early-morning or calm-weather boat trip from Puerto Río Tranquilo-operators run most departures from there and mornings typically have the smoothest water for getting close to the marble formations.
- Confirm in advance whether your chosen operator stops for landings inside specific caverns or only circles them; some companies offer longer private excursions that allow more time at the main formations.
- Visit during the austral summer (December-March) when lake and weather conditions are most favorable for boat access; outside that window services can be limited and crossings choppier.
Best Time to Visit Catedral de Mármol #
Go in southern summer (Dec-Mar) when boat access to the marble caves is most reliable and tour operators run regular excursions.
