Catedral de Mallorca
Church Gothic cathedral dominating Palma's waterfront skyline
Palma’s waterfront Gothic cathedral towers over the bay of Mallorca, notable for its soaring nave and medieval fabric. Visitors come for the architecture, views along the Passeig Marítim and occasional exhibitions tied to the island’s religious history.
The Catedral de Mallorca, officially the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, is a large Gothic cathedral on the seafront in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. Construction began in the 13th century and the building is one of the island’s principal religious landmarks.
The cathedral’s exterior sits directly above the Parc de la Mar and is notable for its tall Gothic silhouette and large clerestory windows that dominate the waterfront skyline. Inside, the interior space emphasizes a tall nave and extensive stonework; there are prominent stained-glass windows and a notable rose window that punctuates the west façade. Guided visits often focus on the cathedral interior, the choir area and the chapels along the aisles.
The cathedral was begun shortly after the conquest of Mallorca in 1229 and developed over the late medieval period, with main construction phases across the 13th to 17th centuries. In the early 20th century the cathedral underwent significant intervention and redesign under Antoni Gaudí, who altered lighting and decorative elements during his period of work.
The cathedral stands in central Palma, adjacent to the Parc de la Mar and close to the old town and Almudaina Palace. It is within walking distance of Palma’s main port and the city’s historic streets and squares.
- Gaudí intervention: Major restoration and redesign work by Antoni Gaudí took place in the early 20th century, altering parts of the interior, lighting and furnishings.
- Long construction period: Construction began soon after the Christian reconquest of Mallorca in 1229 and the building evolved over several centuries, giving it mixed Gothic phases.

Tips for Visiting Catedral de Mallorca #
- Visit late afternoon when light slants through the cathedral's rose window-the so‑called "Gothic lantern" effect is best then.
- Combine the cathedral visit with a walk along Palma's old city: Passeig del Born and the Royal Palace (Palau de l'Almudaina) are a short stroll away.
- Check mass times before touring-the nave is still a working cathedral and visiting hours can be limited during services.
