Catacombs of Saint Agnes

The Catacombs of Saint Agnes are subterranean early Christian burial galleries associated with the martyr Saint Agnes and located outside the ancient walls of Rome. The complex contains tombs, loculi and painted chapels with iconography from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.

The network of passages and chambers reflects early Christian funerary architecture, with painted biblical scenes and symbols visible on some vaults and walls. The catacombs are part of a larger cult site that includes an above-ground basilica dedicated to Saint Agnes.

Used during late antiquity for Christian burials and liturgical commemoration of the martyr, the catacombs were later excavated and conserved by archaeologists and the Church. They remain an important source for studying early Christian art and burial practices.

Situated outside Rome’s ancient walls on one of the principal suburban roads, the site is accessible from the historic centre by road and public transport and is visited alongside the basilica above.
