Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter
Archaeological Site Early Christian catacombs with ancient frescoes and tombs
Outside Rome, the Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter contain early Christian burial galleries and paleochristian frescoes; visitors join guided tours to see subterranean tombs and epigraphs.
The Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter are early Christian burial complexes located southeast of central Rome, historically associated with the martyrs Marcellinus and Peter. The underground galleries contain burial chambers, loculi and early Christian fresco decoration dating principally to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
Visitors encounter long subterranean passages, arched chambers and painted surfaces with biblical and symbolic motifs typical of late antique Christian funerary art. The site is usually presented to the public through guided tours that explain the layout and iconography.
The catacombs were developed and used in late antiquity as communal burial sites and places of commemoration for Christian communities; they preserve archaeological evidence of funerary practices, inscriptions and painted scenes. Over time parts of the network were excavated, studied and conserved by archaeologists and ecclesiastical authorities.
Located on the outskirts of Rome, the catacombs lie outside the ancient Aurelian Walls in the southeastern suburbs and are reached by road from the city centre.
- Date and dedication: Named for the martyrs Marcellinus and Peter, who according to tradition were buried here; the catacombs contain early Christian burials and frescoes dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries.
- Visitor access: Access is usually by guided visit only and parts of the galleries are fragile, so opening times and tour availability can be limited.
