Main image

The Castro of Zambujal is a major Chalcolithic fortified settlement near Torres Vedras in the Lisbon District of Portugal. It dates to the third and early second millennia BC and is one of the most substantial prehistoric fortified sites in the region.

Archaeological remains include a central citadel with dense habitation traces and a series of outer defensive walls and terraces. Excavations have revealed structured street plans, stone-built defenses and evidence for long-term occupation and craft activity.

The site was occupied and remodelled over several centuries during the late Neolithic through the Bronze Age, functioning as a fortified centre in a regional network of prehistoric settlements. Systematic excavations in the 20th century documented its architecture and material culture.

Zambujal lies inland from the Atlantic coast near the town of Torres Vedras in the Lisbon District, roughly north of the Lisbon metropolitan area. The site is set on higher ground within a rural landscape of fields and low hills.

  • Chalcolithic fortified settlement: The site dates to the Copper Age/Chalcolithic and shows multi‑phase occupation with substantial stone fortifications and planned urban features.

What to See #

  • Central citadel and habitation sector: The citadel area contains the main defensive walls and the core habitational sector where houses and storage structures were concentrated; these present a clear plan of a fortified settlement.
  • Outer walls and terraces: Concentric outer fortifications and terraces surround the citadel, showing multiple construction phases and defensive strategies developed during the Chalcolithic period.
