Castro of Santa Trega
Archaeological Site Iron Age hillfort with panoramic estuary views
The Castro of Santa Trega crowns a coastal Galician hill with prehistoric stone terraces and foundations; visitors walk the summit for archaeological remains and wide Atlantic views.
The Castro of Santa Trega is a large hillfort site from the Castro culture located on a coastal hill near A Guarda in Galicia, northwest Spain, principally dating to the pre-Roman Iron Age. The site preserves visible stone house foundations, terracing and defensive earthworks typical of northwestern Iberian castros.
Walkers can see concentric enclosures, circular and oval dwelling foundations and paved streets set into the hillside; an interpretation centre near the site displays archaeological finds and explains excavation phases. The summit affords expansive views across the estuary of the Minho/Miño river and toward the Atlantic coast.
Archaeological work in the 20th century mapped and excavated the settlement, confirming a main occupation in the Iron Age with continuity into the Roman period; finds include pottery, metalwork and structural remains. The site has since been conserved for public interpretation rather than full-scale reconstruction.
Perched on a coastal hill close to the Spanish-Portuguese border, the castro dominates a rocky coastal landscape above the mouth of the Minho/Miño river and is reached by road from the nearby town of A Guarda.
- Panoramic views: The hilltop position provides wide views over the mouth of the Minho/Miño river and the adjacent coast, making it a valuable vantage point for photography and landscape context.
- Visitor practicalities: Terrain is uneven with exposed stone and terraces; sensible footwear is recommended for moving around the excavated zones.
What to See #
- Archaeological site: Sited on the summit and terraces of the hill, the open-air archaeological area contains stone foundations and circular hut bases visible across terraced platforms.
- Interpretation centre: A small on-site interpretation centre presents selected finds and explains the site's chronology and excavation history, with displays of pottery and metalwork recovered during excavations.
