Castra Praetoria
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman barracks near Rome's historical center, visible ruins
Ruined barracks of the Praetorian Guard built under Emperor Tiberius; visitors come for Roman archaeology and to see imposing brickwork integrated into later city fabric near Porta Pia.
Castra Praetoria are the remains of the ancient barracks used by the Praetorian Guard in Rome, located in the Esquiline area of the city near Rome’s Termini station. The site is represented today by surviving sections of monumental brick-faced masonry incorporated into the urban fabric.
The camp was constructed in the early 1st century AD as the permanent base for the emperor’s Praetorian Guard. It was the scene of major events in imperial history, including the murder of Emperor Pertinax by members of the guard in 193 AD, and it ceased to function after the imperial reforms that disbanded the Praetorians in the early 4th century.
Remnant walls and foundations are visible at street level and have been integrated into later buildings and streets, allowing direct observation of imperial military architecture within Rome’s modern centre.
The remains lie close to central Rome in the Esquiline/Termini area, between Via Nazionale and Piazza della Repubblica.
- Visible ruins in the modern city: Long stretches of the original brick-faced barracks wall remain visible in central Rome, incorporated into later buildings and streetscape.
