Castles of Bellinzona

The Castles of Bellinzona are a group of three medieval fortifications and associated defensive walls in the town of Bellinzona, canton Ticino, southern Switzerland. The ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its role guarding major transalpine routes.

The site comprises three principal castles - Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro - together with extensive curtain walls and gates. Visitors can explore towers, battlements and museum displays, and enjoy panoramic views over the Ticino valley.

Construction and enlargements took place across the medieval period, with major building phases between the 13th and 15th centuries as regional powers sought control of alpine transit routes. The complex changed hands over time among local and regional rulers and was adapted to evolving military needs.

The fortifications stand within the town of Bellinzona in canton Ticino, overlooking the Ticino valley and the historic north-south routes that link northern and southern Europe.
