Castle of Xavier

The Castle of Javier (Castillo de Javier) is a medieval fortress in the village of Javier, Navarre, Spain, best known as the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552). The structure has medieval origins and retains a fortified tower and enclosed courtyard.

The castle presents a compact fortified complex with a prominent keep, ramparts and an internal courtyard; it houses an exhibition covering the life of Francis Xavier and the local history. Pilgrims and visitors come both for devotional reasons and to inspect the preserved medieval architecture.

The fortress was the ancestral stronghold of the lords of Xavier and evolved from a defensive castle into a noble residence over the late medieval period. It has been conserved and adapted through the centuries to serve as both heritage site and museum.

The castle stands above the village of Javier in Navarre, in the foothills of the Pyrenean foothills, within the historic rural landscape of northern Spain.
