Castle of Sümeg

The Castle of Sümeg is a restored medieval fortress overlooking the town of Sümeg in Veszprém County, Hungary, and is one of the region’s best-known hilltop castles. Its silhouette crowns a steep volcanic hill and is prominent across the surrounding countryside.

The complex comprises an inner ward on the highest point and a larger outer bailey with ramparts and towers, producing roughly circular defensive lines that visitors can walk. The site often presents live demonstrations of medieval arms and armor, and there are museum displays and reconstructed period interiors that explain the fortress’s defensive functions.

The castle originated in the medieval period and was developed as an episcopal and defensive stronghold; it was modified and expanded across later centuries to suit changing military needs. It fell into disuse and ruin in the modern era before conservation and partial reconstruction in the 20th century returned much of the visible structure.

Dominating a steep hill above the town of Sümeg, the castle lies in Veszprém County in western Hungary, north of the agricultural plain and within sightlines toward the Balaton region.
