Castle of Silves
Castle Red sandstone Moorish castle above Silves town
Perched above Silves, this red-sandstone Moorish fortress offers crenellated walls, a small museum and wide views over the Algarve plain. Visitors come for medieval architecture, town history and the nearby Algarve coast.
The Castle of Silves is a large medieval fortress of red sandstone that dominates the town of Silves in Portugal’s Algarve region. Much of the visible fabric dates to the Moorish period and medieval reconstructions.
Visitors can walk along extensive curtain walls and explore a sequence of towers and courtyards that enclose the hilltop. The fortress offers views over the old town and the Arade valley, with the castle’s reddish masonry and crenellations forming one of the region’s principal historic landmarks.
A fortified site at Silves has roots in the Islamic period when the city was an important regional centre; the castle was remodelled and expanded during the medieval centuries under Moorish rulers. Following the Christian conquest of the Algarve, the fortress remained a strategic stronghold and underwent repairs and alterations in later centuries.
Sited on a rocky hill above the town, the castle overlooks the Arade River in inland Algarve and forms the historic core of Silves, within the Faro district of southern Portugal.
- Material and appearance: Constructed largely of local red sandstone, the walls and towers create a distinctive ochre silhouette above the town.
- Positioning: The castle sits on a hill above the Arade River and the old town of Silves, making it visible from across the valley.
