Castle of Pierrefonds
Castle Medieval château restored in 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc
A 19th‑century restoration by Viollet‑le‑Duc of a medieval castle north of Compiègne. Guided tours highlight restored interiors and battlements, and the site is often used in film.
The Castle of Pierrefonds is a fortified medieval castle in the Oise department of northern France that was substantially rebuilt in the 19th century under architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The site combines original medieval fabric with a Romantic restoration that created the château’s present dramatic appearance.
Visitors can walk the ramparts, enter restored courtyards and view the tall towers and crenellated walls that characterise the restored complex. Interpretation explains the castle’s medieval origins and the 19th-century restoration approach.
The original castle was built in the late 14th century for a duke of Orléans and was later slighted in the early 17th century. In the mid-1800s Napoleon III commissioned Viollet-le-Duc to restore the ruins as a picturesque monument, resulting in the extensive reconstruction visible today.
Pierrefonds stands above the village of the same name in the Compiègne forest area of Hauts-de-France, roughly northeast of Paris and accessible by road from the Oise departmental towns.
