Castle of Loarre

A medieval hilltop castle in Aragon, Spain, renowned for its Romanesque military architecture and substantial state of preservation. The visible fabric of the fortress and its chapels dates largely to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The complex comprises an inner keep, curtain walls, a Romanesque church and ancillary buildings set on a prominent limestone outcrop; terraces and the outer bailey provide panoramic views of the surrounding plain. Visitors commonly explore the ramparts, keep and the medieval church.

Construction and major phases occurred in the high Middle Ages under local Christian lords consolidating the frontier; the site functioned as a defensive stronghold and a regional administrative centre and has survived with many original Romanesque elements intact.

The castle sits above the small town of Loarre in the province of Huesca, Aragon, positioned on a rocky prominence overlooking agricultural plains and the foothills of the central Pyrenees, roughly 40 km north of the city of Huesca.
