Castle of Almodóvar del Río

The Castle of Almodóvar del Río is a fortified hilltop castle in Andalusia that traces medieval and Islamic-period origins and was adapted after the Christian reconquest.

Visitors encounter a series of towers, curtain walls and internal spaces arranged around a hilltop compound that offers expansive views over the surrounding river plain. The site is presented as a largely restored medieval fortress with walkable battlements and interpreted interiors.

The castle developed during the medieval centuries under Islamic and later Christian control; it suffered decay and was the subject of restoration in the modern period to recover its defensive and domestic features.

The fortress sits above the village of Almodóvar del Río in Andalusia, overlooking the Guadalquivir valley to the east of Córdoba.
