Castillo San Felipe de Barajas
Castle Massive Spanish colonial fortress guarding Cartagena's harbor
17th-century fortress on Cartagena’s hills, built to defend the port; visitors walk tunnels and ramparts, study colonial military engineering and take panoramic views over the walled city.
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is a large Spanish-era fortress on San Lázaro Hill in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, constructed principally in the 17th century. It is regarded as one of the most important military structures built by the Spanish in the Americas.
The complex presents layered defensive works including ramparts, bastions and a system of covered galleries and tunnels. Walkable routes allow access to interior passages and upper terraces that overlook Cartagena’s historic centre and the bay.
Major construction and expansions took place under Spanish colonial engineers from the mid-1600s to strengthen Cartagena against pirates and foreign navies. The fortress remained a key defensive position through the colonial period and into the 19th century and has been conserved as a historic site.
The fort crowns San Lázaro Hill within Cartagena’s fortified historic district on the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia, a short distance from the old walled city and port.
- Best viewpoint: Upper terraces and ramparts provide wide views across Cartagena Bay and the historic walled city, making them the best vantage points for photography.
- Tours: Guided tours commonly include the tunnel network and interior chambers; these tours explain construction techniques used in 17th-century Spanish fortification.
What to See #
- Tunnels and galleries: An underground network of tunnels and galleries used for communication, ventilation and drainage during the fortress' active defensive period; many sections are open on guided walks.
- Ramparts and bastions: External ramparts, bastions and glacis that form the fort's visible outline and offer panoramic views over Cartagena Bay and the city.
