Castillo de Vélez-Blanco

Castillo de Vélez-Blanco is a hilltop Renaissance fortress in the town of Vélez-Blanco, province of Almería, Andalusia in southern Spain, constructed in the early 16th century for the Fajardo family. It is notable for combining military features with a decorative Renaissance palace core.

Visitors encounter substantial ruined walls, large openings that once framed an ornate inner courtyard, and sweeping views over the surrounding plateau and valleys. The sculpted marble courtyard that once formed the palace’s centre has been removed and is now exhibited in overseas museums, which is a key feature in studies of Spanish Renaissance art.

The castle was commissioned by the local noble Fajardo family in the early 1500s as both a fortified residence and a symbol of status. Over subsequent centuries the building fell into disuse and partial ruin, with major decorative elements removed during later centuries.

The site sits above the town of Vélez-Blanco in inland Almería, occupying a prominent hilltop in a semi-arid landscape of orchards and Mediterranean scrub.
