Castello Estense is a moated medieval and Renaissance castle in the centre of Ferrara that served as the residence and stronghold of the Este family. It is a defining monument of Ferrara’s historic urban core and one of the city’s most recognizable structures.
The building retains a defensive plan with four corner towers set into a surrounding moat, though large parts were later converted into residential apartments and ceremonial spaces. Visitors commonly see the external moat, towers, inner courtyards, and show rooms that reflect both military and ducal functions.
Construction began in the late 14th century for the ruling Este family and the castle evolved over subsequent centuries from a fortified keep into a combined fortress and palace used by successive dukes. Renovations and decorative additions in the Renaissance period softened the castle’s military appearance and created residential apartments.
The castle sits in Ferrara’s historic centre, a short walk from the Cathedral and urban landmarks; Ferrara is in Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy and the castle occupies a central position within the city fabric.
- UNESCO context: The castle dominates Ferrara's historic centre and forms part of the urban ensemble that contributed to Ferrara's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site for Renaissance town planning.
