Castel del Monte is a 13th-century hilltop castle in the Apulia region of southern Italy, built by Emperor Frederick II and noted for its regular octagonal plan and architectural refinement.
The building is admired for its geometric form - an octagonal main keep with octagonal corner towers - and for the quality of its stonework and proportions. Interiors and the roofline emphasize symmetry and a compact footprint on a limestone ridge between the Adriatic and the inland plain.
Commissioned by Frederick II in the mid 13th century, the structure served as an imperial hunting lodge and a statement of imperial power and learned design rather than as a typical feudal fortress. It has been conserved as a landmark example of medieval secular architecture.

The Canal du Midi passes through Toulouse and many Occitanie towns. Arrive by train at Toulouse‑Matabiau (SNCF/TGV/intercity); the historic canal sections in the city (e.g., Ponts‑Jumeaux) are about a 10-20 minute walk from Matabiau and the city centre. By car, approach Toulouse via the A61/A62 motorways and follow signs for the city centre/Canal du Midi; there is roadside and town parking near popular towpaths in Toulouse and other canal towns.
