Casilinum is the site of an ancient Roman town and archaeological area in Campania, located near the modern towns of Capua and Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The site occupied an important position in antiquity close to the Volturno River and along Roman road routes.
Remains at and around Casilinum include traces of urban structures and funerary evidence typical of Roman-period settlements; the site is studied within the broader landscape of ancient Campanian settlement. Public interpretation and archaeological work have exposed portions of the ancient footprint.
Historically Casilinum was an independent settlement in antiquity that featured in Roman-era geography and transport networks; over time its territory was absorbed into the evolving towns of the modern era.
Geographically it sits in Campania on the flat plain around the Volturno river system, immediately north of the modern urban area of Capua and within the province of Caserta.
