Casa Batlló
Monument Modernist Gaudí residence notable for organic façade
Gaudí’s Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia displays a curving facade, ceramic ‘trencadís’ mosaics, imaginative roofline and redesigned interiors that visitors explore on guided tours.
Casa Batlló is a Modernisme (Art Nouveau) residential building on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, redesigned by Antoni Gaudí between 1904 and 1906. The façade and roof are famed for their flowing forms, colorful ceramics and skeletal balconettes.
Inside, visitors can see the Noble Floor reception rooms, an undulating lightwell, original Gaudí furniture and the distinctive dragon-like roof ridge. The building is a major stop on Barcelona’s Modernisme route and is included in UNESCO’s listing for Gaudí’s architecture.
The house was commissioned by industrialist Josep Batlló and transformed from a conventional 19th-century block into Gaudí’s imaginative reinterpretation, completed in the first decade of the 20th century. It has been restored for public visitation while preserving many original details.
Casa Batlló stands on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample district, within walking distance of other Gaudí landmarks such as La Pedrera and Plaça de Catalunya.
