Main image

Casa Batlló is a Modernisme (Art Nouveau) residential building on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, redesigned by Antoni Gaudí between 1904 and 1906. The façade and roof are famed for their flowing forms, colorful ceramics and skeletal balconettes.

Inside, visitors can see the Noble Floor reception rooms, an undulating lightwell, original Gaudí furniture and the distinctive dragon-like roof ridge. The building is a major stop on Barcelona’s Modernisme route and is included in UNESCO’s listing for Gaudí’s architecture.

The house was commissioned by industrialist Josep Batlló and transformed from a conventional 19th-century block into Gaudí’s imaginative reinterpretation, completed in the first decade of the 20th century. It has been restored for public visitation while preserving many original details.

Casa Batlló stands on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample district, within walking distance of other Gaudí landmarks such as La Pedrera and Plaça de Catalunya.

  • Visits: Guided and self-guided visits are available; the building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Gaudí's works in Barcelona.
  • Timing: Peak visiting hours are mid-morning to early afternoon; booking online in advance is recommended to avoid queues.

  • Lightwell: A light-filled central lightwell surrounded by curved facades and custom-designed windows that provide ventilation and illumination throughout the building.

Casa Batlló is on Passeig de Gràcia in central Barcelona. From Plaça de Catalunya it’s about 600-900 m (a 5-10 minute walk) down Passeig de Gràcia.

Tips for Visiting Casa Batlló #

  • Book a timed-entry for the earliest slot or an 'early access' option if available - the main rooms fill quickly and first visitors get the best photographs with fewer people.
  • Enter from Passeig de Gràcia and head straight to the attic and rooftop chimneys - those ceramic chimneys and the roofscape are highlights that many visitors miss when they linger only in the main showrooms.
  • Use the audio/interactive guide included with most tickets to pick out Gaudí's hidden details (truss work, skylights and ventilation solutions) that are easy to overlook in a quick walk-through.
